The Scamihorn Heritage Tour

Tomorrow, George Scamihorn, Philip Scamihorn and John Scamehorn will embark on the Scamihorn Heritage Tour through Hancock County, Kentucky—reconnecting with their family’s history nearly 95 years after the deaths of their great-grandparents, Jacob and Veolia Scamihorn

The trip grew out of genealogical research into Jacob and Veolia’s lives and the events of September 24, 1931, when they were returning to their farm near Waitman after visiting their daughter Anna Belle Holland and her family. Their horse-drawn buggy was struck by an automobile on U.S. Highway 60, killing them both.

The tour has two major research goals: locate the Scamihorn family farm near Waitman and identify Anna Belle and Robert Holland’s farm east of Lewisport. If successful, George, Philip, and John hope to retrace Jacob and Veolia’s final ride—from their daughter’s farm, through Lewisport, and along the historic U.S. Highway 60 toward their home in Waitman.

Along the way, they’ll visit the Hancock County Archives, explore places connected to the family’s history, investigate the approximate site of the 1931 accident, and visit Lewisport Cemetery, where Jacob and Veolia are buried together.
